Runner's Stretch

Runner's Stretch is a floor-based lower-body stretch performed from a half-kneeling position with the front leg straightened. It primarily lengthens the hamstrings and can also stretch the calf of the extended leg. It supports lower-body mobility and may be useful before or after running and other leg training.

Instructions

  1. Start half-kneeling on a comfortable surface, with one knee under your hip and the other foot placed in front.
  2. Straighten the front leg gradually, placing its heel on the floor and lifting the toes toward your shin.
  3. Hinge at the hips and lean your torso forward with a long, neutral spine until you feel a gentle stretch behind the front thigh and possibly the calf.
  4. Hold without forcing the position while breathing steadily; keep the front knee softly unlocked rather than aggressively locked.
  5. Return slowly by bending the front knee, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a gentle intensity: stretching should feel like steady tension, not sharp pain or numbness.
  2. Keep the movement at the hips: avoid rounding your lower back just to reach farther.
  3. Move slowly: ease into and out of the stretch rather than bouncing.
