Seated Floor Hamstring Stretch

The seated floor hamstring stretch is a static flexibility exercise performed while sitting on the floor with the legs extended. It primarily lengthens the hamstrings and can also encourage comfortable hip and lower-back mobility. It supports flexibility, recovery, and preparation for activities that require hip hinging or straight-leg positions.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit on the floor with both legs extended in front of you, feet relaxed or gently flexed.
  2. Lengthen your spine: Sit tall on your sitting bones and keep your shoulders relaxed.
  3. Fold from the hips: Slowly lean forward from the hips, reaching toward your shins, ankles, or feet only as far as is comfortable.
  4. Hold and release: Breathe steadily, hold a gentle stretch without bouncing, then return upright slowly. Stop if you feel sharp pain, numbness, or tingling.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize a hip hinge: Keep the chest gently forward rather than rounding forcefully through the lower back.
  2. Use an appropriate range: Reaching to the shins is effective; you do not need to touch your toes.
  3. Keep it gentle: Exhale as you ease forward and avoid bouncing or forcing the stretch.
