Smith Machine Standing Calf Raise

The Smith Machine Standing Calf Raise is a loaded ankle-extension exercise performed while standing under a Smith machine bar. It primarily trains the gastrocnemius, with the soleus assisting. It supports calf strength and development while the fixed bar path can make loading straightforward.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith bar around shoulder height and stand beneath it with the bar resting securely across your upper back.
  2. Place your feet about hip-width apart, brace your torso, and unrack the bar by rotating it clear of the catches.
  3. Keep your knees straight but not locked, then rise onto the balls of your feet by extending your ankles.
  4. Pause briefly at the top without shifting your body forward or backward.
  5. Lower your heels under control until your calves are comfortably stretched, then repeat and re-rack the bar securely when finished.

Technique tips

  1. Use a load that lets you control the bottom position and complete each repetition without bouncing.
  2. Keep pressure balanced through both forefeet rather than rolling onto the outer edges of your feet.
  3. Avoid bending your knees to turn the movement into a squat-like motion.
  4. Check that the Smith bar is fully engaged with the catches before stepping away.
