Smith Machine Front Squat

The Smith Machine Front Squat is a guided barbell squat performed with the bar resting across the front of the shoulders. It primarily trains the quadriceps and also works the glutes, core, and upper back to maintain an upright torso. It supports lower-body strength, controlled squat technique, and leg muscle development.

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith bar around upper-chest height and place the safety stops just below the lowest depth you can control. Load the bar evenly.
  2. Stand under the bar with it resting across the front of your shoulders, keeping your elbows lifted and chest tall. Use a comfortable front-rack arm position without pulling the bar with your wrists.
  3. Place your feet about shoulder width apart, slightly in front of the bar path if needed to stay balanced, and brace your abdomen.
  4. Unrack the bar, then bend your knees and hips together to descend in a controlled motion. Keep your heels down, knees tracking over your toes, and torso upright.
  5. Lower only as far as you can maintain a neutral spine, elevated chest, and stable foot pressure.
  6. Drive through your mid-foot and heels to stand, extending your knees and hips together. Exhale near the top and repeat without bouncing or locking the knees forcefully.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows high: This helps the bar stay supported on the shoulders and reduces the tendency to lean forward.
  2. Use a controlled load: Start light enough to maintain an upright torso and consistent depth on every repetition.
  3. Maintain full-foot pressure: Do not let your weight shift onto the toes or allow the heels to rise.
  4. Set the safety stops: Adjust them before each set so they can catch the bar if you cannot complete a repetition.
