Smith Machine Squat

The Smith Machine Squat is a guided barbell squat performed on the fixed track of a Smith machine. It primarily trains the quadriceps, with meaningful involvement from the glutes and calves. It supports lower-body strength and muscle development while providing a more controlled bar path than a free-bar squat.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the bar height around upper-chest level and load it evenly. Position the safety stops just below the lowest depth you can control.
  2. Stand under the bar with it resting securely across your upper back, not on your neck. Place your feet about shoulder-width apart and slightly in front of the bar line.
  3. Unrack the bar by standing tall and rotating it clear of the hooks. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and maintain a neutral spine.
  4. Lower with control by bending the knees and hips together. Keep the knees tracking in line with the toes and keep your heels flat as you descend to a comfortable, controlled depth.
  5. Drive through the mid-foot and heels to stand, extending the knees and hips without forcefully locking them. Re-rack the bar securely after the set.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load until you can repeat the same depth and alignment on every repetition.
  2. Keep your whole foot grounded; avoid shifting excessively onto the toes or allowing the heels to lift.
  3. Do not let the knees collapse inward. Think about guiding them in the same direction as your toes.
  4. Breathe and brace before each descent, then exhale gradually as you rise while maintaining trunk tension.
