Smith Machine Lunge

The Smith Machine Lunge is a loaded split-stance lunge performed with the bar guided on fixed rails. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while challenging balance, hip control, and lower-body strength. It can support muscle building and strength development when performed with controlled technique.

Instructions

  1. Set the bar in the Smith machine slightly below shoulder height and choose a light load. Position the bar across the upper back, not the neck, then stand tall and release the safety catches.
  2. Take a split stance with one foot forward and the other behind you. Keep both feet pointing generally forward, your chest lifted, and your torso upright.
  3. Lower under control by bending both knees and dropping the rear knee toward the floor. Keep the front foot flat and let the front knee track in line with the toes.
  4. Reach a comfortable depth without the rear knee forcefully striking the floor or the front heel lifting. Keep the bar path controlled and your hips square.
  5. Drive through the front foot to return to the starting position. Complete the desired repetitions, then switch leg positions and re-engage the safety catches before stepping away.

Technique tips

  1. Use a stable stance: choose a stride length that allows both knees to bend comfortably while the front heel stays down.
  2. Control the descent: do not drop quickly into the bottom position or bounce out of it.
  3. Keep knee tracking smooth: avoid allowing the front knee to collapse inward.
  4. Start conservatively: the fixed bar path may require small adjustments to foot placement; reduce the load if alignment cannot be maintained.
