Stability Ball Standing Hamstring Stretch

The Stability Ball Standing Hamstring Stretch is a controlled standing stretch performed with one heel supported on a stability ball. It primarily lengthens the hamstrings and can also gently stretch the calves while encouraging hip-hinge mobility. It supports lower-body flexibility and comfortable movement through the hips and knees.

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Place a stability ball on a non-slip floor near a wall or other stable support.
  2. Take the position: Stand tall and place one heel lightly on top of the ball with that leg comfortably straight; keep the standing knee softly bent.
  3. Hinge forward: Brace your trunk gently and tip forward from the hips until you feel a mild stretch along the back of the raised thigh.
  4. Hold with control: Keep your spine long, hips level, and the ball still. Breathe steadily without bouncing.
  5. Return and switch: Press through the standing foot to rise slowly, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light stretch: Stretch to mild tension, not pain or numbness.
  2. Keep the ball close: A small bend in the raised knee or a closer ball position can improve control.
  3. Prioritize balance: Hold a wall or stable support if the ball rolls or your balance is limited.
