Seated Hamstring and Calf Stretch

The seated hamstring and calf stretch is a static lower-body stretch performed with the legs extended in front of you. It primarily lengthens the hamstrings and calves while encouraging comfortable mobility through the hips, knees, and ankles. It can support flexibility and recovery work when performed gently and without bouncing.

Instructions

  1. Sit tall on the floor with both legs extended straight in front of you and your feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Flex your ankles by drawing your toes toward your shins to include the calves; keep your knees as straight as is comfortable.
  3. Hinge forward from the hips with a long spine, reaching toward your shins, ankles, or feet without rounding forcefully through the lower back.
  4. Hold the gentle stretch while breathing steadily. Stop before pain, tingling, or numbness, then slowly return upright.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize length over reach: keep your chest open and hinge from the hips rather than forcing your hands to the toes.
  2. Use a comfortable knee position: a slight bend in the knees can reduce strain while still stretching the hamstrings and calves.
  3. Do not bounce: ease into the position, breathe slowly, and hold only a mild to moderate pulling sensation.
