Band Hamstring Stretch

The band hamstring stretch is a controlled supine stretch that uses a resistance band to gently raise and support one leg. It primarily targets the hamstrings and can also lengthen the calf depending on ankle position. It supports lower-body flexibility and comfortable hip movement.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Lie on your back with both legs extended and place the middle of a resistance band around the arch of one foot.
  2. Hold the band: Hold an end of the band in each hand, keeping your shoulders relaxed and the other leg long on the floor.
  3. Raise the leg: Slowly lift the banded leg toward the ceiling, using the band for gentle assistance. Keep the knee as straight as is comfortable.
  4. Find the stretch: Stop when you feel a mild stretch along the back of the raised thigh; keep your hips level and your lower back relaxed.
  5. Hold and change sides: Breathe steadily while holding the position, then lower the leg with control and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use light tension: Pull only enough to create a mild, steady stretch; do not force the leg closer.
  2. Keep the pelvis quiet: Avoid lifting or twisting the hips to gain range of motion.
  3. Breathe normally: Exhale gently as you settle into the stretch and avoid holding your breath.
  4. Do not bounce: Use a smooth hold and ease off if the sensation becomes sharp, numb, or painful.
