Stability Ball Hamstring Contract Relax

This assisted contract-relax stretch uses a stability ball to gently lengthen the hamstrings. You press the heel into the ball without moving it, then relax and gradually increase the stretch. It supports hamstring flexibility, controlled mobility, and awareness of pelvic position.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Lie on your back with one leg extended on the floor and the other heel resting on the top of a stable exercise ball. Keep both hips facing upward.
  2. Find the stretch: Straighten the raised leg as comfortably as possible and draw the toes gently toward your shin until you feel a mild hamstring stretch.
  3. Contract: Exhale and press your heel lightly down into the ball without letting the ball roll or bending the knee. Hold the gentle contraction for about 5–10 seconds while keeping the pelvis still.
  4. Relax and lengthen: Release the pressure, breathe normally, and carefully straighten or raise the leg slightly farther only if the stretch remains comfortable. Repeat the contract-relax cycle, then switch sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use light effort: The heel press should be gentle, not a maximal hamstring contraction.
  2. Keep the pelvis quiet: Avoid arching the low back or rotating the hips to gain range.
  3. Stay comfortable: Work with mild tension rather than sharp pain, numbness, or tingling, and keep the ball from rolling.
