Toe Touches

The standing toe touch is a forward-bending stretch performed from a standing position. It primarily lengthens the hamstrings and calves while also encouraging relaxed movement through the lower back. It can support lower-body flexibility and mobility when performed slowly and without forcing range of motion.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and arms relaxed by your sides.
  2. Brace gently and hinge at your hips as you begin to fold forward; let your head and neck relax.
  3. Lower only as far as comfortable, reaching toward your shins, ankles, or toes without bouncing or pulling yourself down.
  4. Hold the stretch while breathing slowly and evenly, keeping a slight bend in the knees if the backs of your legs feel too tight.
  5. Return with control by bending your knees slightly and rising slowly, rather than jerking your torso upright.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize the hip hinge rather than rounding aggressively through the lower back.
  2. Keep your knees softly bent if needed; touching your toes is not required for an effective stretch.
  3. Do not bounce at the bottom position, as smooth and steady breathing is more useful than forcing depth.
  4. Rise slowly and pause if you feel light-headed after the forward bend.
