Wide Leg Stretch

The seated wide-legged forward fold stretch is performed by sitting with the legs spread comfortably apart and leaning forward from the hips. It primarily stretches the hamstrings and inner thighs, while also encouraging mobility through the hips and lower back. It can support flexibility, comfortable movement, and recovery after lower-body training.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit on the floor with both legs extended wide apart at a comfortable angle. Sit tall on your sitting bones, with knees and toes pointing upward.
  2. Lengthen your spine: Place your hands on the floor in front of you and gently brace your abdomen. Keep your chest open rather than rounding your back.
  3. Fold from the hips: Exhale and walk your hands forward, hinging at the hips as far as you can without forcing the position.
  4. Hold comfortably: Relax your shoulders and breathe slowly while maintaining a mild to moderate stretch through the inner thighs and backs of the legs.
  5. Return slowly: Walk the hands back and use your core to sit upright. Do not bounce or pull yourself deeper into the stretch.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize hip movement: Think about bringing your belly forward from the hips rather than trying to force your head toward the floor.
  2. Adjust the leg width: Use a narrower position if your pelvis tucks under or your back rounds substantially.
  3. Use calm breathing: Exhale gently as you settle into the stretch, and never push into sharp, pinching, or numb sensations.
  4. Keep it controlled: Avoid bouncing; gradual, relaxed holds are more appropriate for this stretch.
