Posterior Lower Leg Stretch

The Posterior Lower Leg Stretch is a standing stretch for the calf muscles on the back of the lower leg. It primarily targets the gastrocnemius and soleus while supporting ankle mobility and flexibility for walking, running, and lower-body training. It is commonly performed as a controlled, time-based stretch.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand facing a stable wall and place both hands on it at about chest height.
  2. Step one foot back, keeping that leg straight, the heel down, and the toes pointing forward. Keep the front knee softly bent.
  3. Keep your hips facing forward and gently shift your body forward until you feel a mild stretch through the back calf.
  4. Hold the position while breathing steadily; do not bounce or force the range.
  5. To emphasize the deeper calf muscle, slightly bend the back knee while keeping its heel on the floor.
  6. Return slowly to the start and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the back heel grounded and the back foot pointing forward; letting the foot turn out can reduce the intended calf stretch.
  2. Use a comfortable range: the sensation should be a mild, steady pull rather than sharp pain.
  3. Do not bounce. Hold the stretch with calm breathing and ease out of it gradually.
