Bench Calf Stretch

The bench calf stretch is a standing stretch performed with the hands supported on a bench and one leg stepped back. It lengthens the calf muscles, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, while encouraging ankle mobility. It can support flexibility, recovery, and comfortable lower-leg movement.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Place a stable bench in front of you and stand facing it at about arm’s length.
  2. Put both hands on the bench for support, then step one foot back while keeping the front foot flat and knee softly bent.
  3. Point the back toes forward and press the back heel gently into the floor.
  4. Keep your hips facing forward and lean your body forward until you feel a mild stretch in the back calf.
  5. Hold the position with steady breathing; do not bounce or force the range.
  6. Step forward to release, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the heel down: Lifted heels reduce the stretch on the calf.
  2. Align the feet: Keep the back toes pointing forward rather than turning outward.
  3. Use gentle tension: Aim for a mild, tolerable pull, not sharp pain.
  4. Change knee position carefully: A straighter back knee emphasizes the upper calf; a slight bend can shift the feeling lower in the calf.
