Band Calf Raise

The resistance band calf raise is a standing ankle-extension exercise performed against band resistance. It primarily trains the calf muscles and supports ankle strength, lower-leg endurance, and controlled push-off mechanics.

Instructions

  1. Set up the band: Stand upright and place the middle of a resistance band under the balls of both feet. Hold one end in each hand and keep enough tension that the band is secure.
  2. Find your stance: Place your feet about hip-width apart, keep your knees softly bent, and stand tall with your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  3. Rise smoothly: Press through the balls of your feet to lift both heels as high as comfortably possible while keeping the band under steady tension.
  4. Pause and lower: Briefly squeeze your calves at the top, then lower your heels slowly and with control until your feet are flat.
  5. Repeat safely: Perform controlled repetitions without bouncing. Use a wall or sturdy support lightly for balance if needed, and stop if you feel sharp pain.

Technique tips

  1. Keep pressure even: Press through the balls of both feet equally so that neither ankle rolls outward or inward.
  2. Control the lowering phase: A slow descent is as important as the lift; do not let the band pull your heels down.
  3. Choose manageable tension: Use a band that allows a full, smooth range of motion without forcing your ankles or changing your posture.
