Dumbbell Calf Raise

The dumbbell calf raise is a standing ankle-extension exercise performed while holding a dumbbell for added resistance. It primarily targets the calves, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, while the feet and ankles stabilize the movement. It supports calf strength, muscle development, ankle control, and lower-leg conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart on a flat, stable surface. Hold one dumbbell securely at your side with a neutral wrist.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest lifted, spine neutral, and abdominal muscles lightly engaged. Let the free hand rest on a stable support if needed for balance.
  3. Rise: Press through the balls of both feet and slowly raise your heels as high as comfortably possible. Keep your knees straight but not locked.
  4. Pause: Briefly squeeze your calves at the top without rolling your ankles inward or outward.
  5. Lower: Slowly lower both heels under control until your feet are flat on the floor, then repeat for the planned repetitions.
  6. Finish safely: Complete the set with controlled movement, set the dumbbell down carefully, and stop if you feel sharp pain or cannot maintain balance.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: Select a dumbbell that lets you keep a smooth, full range of motion without leaning or rushing.
  2. Control the tempo: Avoid bouncing from the bottom; a deliberate lowering phase keeps the calves under tension.
  3. Keep pressure even: Press through the balls of both feet and avoid shifting body weight toward the outer or inner edges of the feet.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale as you rise and inhale as you lower; do not hold your breath unnecessarily.
