Calf Raise On A Dumbbell

The calf raise on a dumbbell is a standing calf exercise performed with the balls of the feet elevated on a dumbbell to increase ankle range of motion. It primarily trains the calves and can help build lower-leg strength, muscular endurance, and ankle control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up securely: Place a dumbbell on a firm, non-slip floor where it cannot roll, and stand near a wall or sturdy support for balance.
  2. Place the balls of both feet on the dumbbell, with your heels hanging off the back; keep your feet parallel and about hip-width apart.
  3. Hold the support lightly, stand tall, and let your heels lower slowly until you feel a comfortable stretch in your calves.
  4. Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible, keeping your knees straight but not locked.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower under control to the stretched position and repeat.
  6. Stop and reset if the dumbbell shifts or feels unstable; use a more stable elevated surface if needed.

Technique tips

  1. Use slow control: avoid bouncing at the bottom or dropping the heels quickly.
  2. Keep pressure even through the balls of both feet; do not let the ankles roll inward or outward.
  3. Prioritize stability: a dumbbell can be unstable as a platform, so keep a hand near support and switch to a stable step if needed.
  4. Exhale as you rise and inhale as you lower.
