Heel Elevations

Standing heel raises are a bodyweight calf exercise performed by lifting the heels while standing tall. They primarily train the calves and help develop ankle strength, lower-leg endurance, balance, and control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, toes pointing forward, and hold a stable support lightly if needed for balance.
  2. Rise: Press evenly through the balls of both feet and lift your heels as high as comfortably possible while keeping your knees straight but not locked.
  3. Pause: Briefly squeeze your calves at the top without leaning forward or rolling onto the outer edges of your feet.
  4. Lower: Slowly return both heels to the floor with control, then repeat. Stop if you feel sharp pain or cannot maintain balance.

Technique tips

  1. Use a full controlled range: Let the heels settle to the floor between repetitions, then rise smoothly without bouncing.
  2. Keep pressure even: Avoid letting the ankles roll inward or outward; keep the weight through the balls of the feet.
  3. Control the tempo: Exhale as you rise and lower slowly, especially if balance is limited.
