Barbell Round the World Shoulder Stretch

The Barbell Round the World Shoulder Stretch is a controlled mobility drill in which a very light barbell is moved in a wide arc around the head. It targets shoulder mobility while lengthening the chest, lats, and upper back. It can support overhead range of motion and shoulder preparation for upper-body training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart and hold an unloaded or very light barbell with a wide overhand grip in front of your thighs.
  2. Brace gently: Keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, soften your knees, and maintain straight but relaxed elbows.
  3. Move around the head: Slowly raise the bar in front of you, pass it overhead, and continue the wide arc behind your body without forcing the range.
  4. Return with control: Reverse the path to bring the bar back to the front. Use a pain-free range, repeat smoothly, and stop if you feel sharp pain or pinching.

Technique tips

  1. Use a wide grip: Start wider than shoulder width; widen it further if passing behind the body feels restricted.
  2. Keep it light: Use an unloaded bar or a bar light enough to move slowly without compensating.
  3. Avoid arching: Do not flare the ribs or excessively arch the lower back to create range of motion.
