Chest and Shoulder Stretch

The chest and shoulder stretch is a gentle mobility exercise that opens the front of the chest and shoulders. It primarily lengthens the pectoral muscles and the front of the shoulders, helping support upper-body flexibility, posture, and comfortable overhead movement. It is commonly used during warm-ups, cool-downs, or movement breaks.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  2. Clasp your hands behind your back with straight but relaxed arms and palms facing each other.
  3. Gently draw your shoulder blades down and back, then lift your hands slightly away from your body until you feel a comfortable stretch across your chest and the front of your shoulders.
  4. Hold the position while breathing slowly and keeping your neck long; do not force the arms upward or arch the lower back.
  5. Release slowly, relax your arms, and repeat as desired without bouncing.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the stretch gentle. Aim for mild tension, not pain, numbness, or pinching in the shoulder.
  2. Keep your ribs down. Avoid creating the stretch by excessively arching your lower back.
  3. Breathe steadily. Slow, relaxed breaths can help you settle into the position without forcing the range.
