Dynamic Chest Stretch

The dynamic chest stretch uses controlled arm-opening movements to mobilize the chest and front of the shoulders. It primarily targets the pectorals while also involving the shoulders and upper back, making it useful as part of an upper-body warm-up and for improving comfortable shoulder movement.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  2. Raise both arms out to the sides at shoulder height with a slight bend in the elbows.
  3. Open your arms by drawing them gently back until you feel a mild stretch across the chest and front of the shoulders; keep the shoulders down.
  4. Bring your arms forward in a controlled motion, allowing them to cross lightly in front of your chest without forcing the range.
  5. Continue smoothly for the desired repetitions, breathing steadily and keeping your neck relaxed. Stop if you feel sharp pain or pinching.

Technique tips

  1. Use a gentle range: this is a mobility drill, so aim for mild tension rather than an intense stretch.
  2. Avoid shrugging or arching your lower back; keep the movement at the shoulders and upper back.
  3. Move smoothly and breathe throughout each repetition instead of bouncing or holding your breath.
