One-Arm Wall Stretch

The one-arm wall stretch is a standing chest and front-of-shoulder stretch performed by placing one arm against a wall and turning the body away. It primarily lengthens the chest, especially the outer chest fibers, while also stretching the front of the shoulder. It can support upper-body mobility and help offset prolonged rounded-shoulder postures.

Instructions

  1. Stand beside a wall with your feet about hip-width apart and one shoulder facing the wall.
  2. Place one arm on the wall at roughly shoulder height, with the elbow straight but not forcefully locked and the palm flat.
  3. Set your posture by keeping your ribs gently down, spine tall, and shoulder away from your ear.
  4. Turn your body away from the arm slowly until you feel a mild stretch across the chest and front of the shoulder.
  5. Hold the position while breathing calmly, without bouncing or forcing the range. Return slowly, then repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the stretch gentle. A mild pulling sensation is appropriate; sharp pain, numbness, or tingling is not.
  2. Avoid shrugging. Keep the stretching-side shoulder low and away from the ear.
  3. Control the torso turn. Rotate from the body rather than pushing hard through the arm or hand.
  4. Use steady breathing. Exhale as you ease into the stretch and maintain a relaxed neck.
