Standing Chest Opener

The Standing Chest Opener is a gentle upper-body stretch performed while standing, usually by drawing the arms behind the body and opening the chest. It primarily stretches the chest and front of the shoulders while encouraging an upright thoracic posture. It can support shoulder mobility, posture awareness, and recovery after prolonged sitting or pressing exercises.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, knees softly bent, and your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  2. Place your arms behind you and either interlace your fingers or hold one wrist with the opposite hand.
  3. Open the chest gently by drawing the shoulder blades slightly down and back, then moving the hands away from your body without forcefully arching the lower back.
  4. Hold and breathe slowly for a comfortable duration, keeping the neck long and the shoulders away from the ears.
  5. Release with control and return the arms to your sides. Stop or reduce the range if you feel sharp pain, tingling, or pinching in the shoulders.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the ribs controlled: open through the chest and upper back rather than pushing the ribs forward or overextending the low back.
  2. Use a comfortable range: the stretch should feel mild to moderate, never sharp or forced.
  3. Breathe steadily: slow exhales can help you relax into the position without pulling harder on the arms.
