Barbell Seated Calf Raise

The barbell seated calf raise is a seated ankle-extension exercise performed with a barbell resting securely across the thighs near the knees. It primarily trains the calves, with particular emphasis on the soleus muscle, and supports lower-leg strength and calf development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Sit upright on a sturdy bench with your feet about hip-width apart and the balls of your feet on a stable raised edge, allowing your heels to move freely.
  2. Place a padded barbell across your lower thighs, close to the knees, and hold it firmly with both hands so it cannot roll.
  3. Begin with your heels lowered under control until you feel a comfortable stretch through the calves.
  4. Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible, keeping your knees still and your torso upright.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower slowly and deliberately to the stretched position before repeating.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load until you can keep the barbell stable throughout every repetition.
  2. Keep the movement at the ankle; avoid bouncing, swinging the knees, or using momentum.
  3. Use a controlled full range of motion, including a comfortable stretch at the bottom and a firm contraction at the top.
  4. Exhale as you raise the heels and inhale as you lower them.
