Barbell Standing Calf Raise

The barbell standing calf raise is a weighted ankle-extension exercise performed while standing with a barbell supported across the upper back. It primarily trains the calves, especially the gastrocnemius, and helps develop lower-leg strength, muscular endurance, and ankle control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a barbell in a rack at upper-back height, load it conservatively, and position it securely across your upper back as for a back squat.
  2. Step back carefully and stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, toes facing forward, and your core gently braced.
  3. Keep your knees straight but not forcefully locked, then press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as you can with control.
  4. Pause briefly at the top while keeping your torso upright and the barbell steady.
  5. Lower your heels slowly until your feet are flat on the floor, then repeat without bouncing or shifting your weight excessively.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light starting load. The barbell sits on your back, so balance and rack safety matter as much as calf effort.
  2. Keep pressure centered over the first and second toes; do not let your ankles roll inward or outward.
  3. Use a controlled rise and descent rather than bouncing, especially at the bottom position.
  4. Stop the set if you cannot keep the bar level, your torso upright, or your footing secure.
