Dumbbell Seated Calf Raise

The dumbbell seated calf raise is an isolation exercise performed while seated with a dumbbell resting securely on the knees. It primarily trains the calves, especially the soleus, and supports lower-leg strength and calf muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit upright on a sturdy bench with your feet flat on the floor, about hip-width apart, and the balls of your feet positioned firmly on the ground.
  2. Place the dumbbell: Hold one dumbbell horizontally with both hands and rest it securely across the lower thighs just above the knees.
  3. Raise: Press through the balls of your feet to lift your heels as high as comfortably possible, keeping the knees still and the dumbbell controlled.
  4. Lower: Slowly lower your heels until they return to the floor, feel a comfortable stretch in the calves, and repeat without bouncing.

Technique tips

  1. Use controlled repetitions: Pause briefly at the top and lower slowly rather than bouncing.
  2. Keep pressure even: Press through the balls of both feet without rolling the ankles inward or outward.
  3. Choose a manageable load: The dumbbell must remain secure on the thighs throughout every repetition.
