Machine Seated Single-Leg Calf Raise

The machine seated single-leg calf raise is an isolation exercise performed one leg at a time with resistance from a seated calf-raise machine. It primarily trains the calves, especially the soleus, while allowing each side to work independently. It supports calf strength, muscular development, and lower-leg control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine with the seat and thigh pad adjusted so you can sit upright with one foot placed securely on the platform.
  2. Place the working foot with the ball of the foot on the platform and the heel free to move. Keep the other foot clear of the platform and out of the movement path.
  3. Position the thigh pad firmly over the working thigh, release the safety catch if present, and begin with the heel lowered under control to a comfortable stretch.
  4. Press through the ball of the working foot to raise the heel as high as comfortably possible. Keep the knee bent and the foot aligned without rolling inward or outward.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower the heel slowly to the starting stretch without bouncing. Complete the desired repetitions before switching legs.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled range of motion: let the heel lower gradually and rise fully without forcing an uncomfortable stretch.
  2. Keep steady pressure through the ball of the foot; do not use momentum or bounce at the bottom.
  3. Choose a load that allows the knee, ankle, and foot to remain stable throughout every repetition.
