Barbell Side Split Squat

The Barbell Side Split Squat is a lateral lower-body exercise performed by shifting into one bent leg while the other leg stays straighter. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while challenging hip mobility, balance, and side-to-side leg strength. It can support lower-body strength and movement control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the barbell across your upper back and stand tall with a wide stance, toes pointing mostly forward or slightly outward.
  2. Brace your core and shift your hips toward one side, bending that knee while keeping the other leg relatively straight and both feet flat.
  3. Lower under control until you reach a comfortable depth, keeping the bent knee aligned with its toes and your chest lifted.
  4. Drive through the bent-leg foot to return to the centered starting position, then repeat to the other side or complete the planned repetitions on one side.

Technique tips

  1. Start light: use a load that lets you control the lateral shift without leaning or twisting.
  2. Keep the working heel down: pressure should stay through the full foot of the bent leg.
  3. Do not force depth: use only the range of motion you can reach while maintaining knee alignment and a neutral spine.
