Barbell Snatch Deadlift

The barbell snatch deadlift is a wide-grip deadlift variation used to develop the pulling positions and strength needed for the snatch. It primarily trains the legs, glutes, and back while demanding a stable trunk and controlled bar path. It supports Olympic weightlifting technique, lower-body strength, and posterior-chain development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand with the bar over the middle of your feet, feet about hip width apart, and take a wide snatch grip on the bar.
  2. Bend your knees and hinge at the hips until your shins are close to the bar; keep your arms straight, chest up, and back neutral.
  3. Brace your trunk, press through the floor, and lift the bar by extending your knees and hips together. Keep the bar close to your legs.
  4. Finish standing tall with hips and knees extended, without leaning back or shrugging excessively.
  5. Lower the bar under control by hinging at the hips, then bending the knees once the bar passes them. Reset your position before the next repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Use a grip that is wide but secure: your hands should be in the same position used for your snatch.
  2. Keep your lats engaged to hold the bar close; do not let it drift forward away from your body.
  3. Start with a manageable load and stop the set if you cannot maintain a neutral back or controlled bar path.
