Barbell Squat to Shoulder Press

The barbell squat to shoulder press combines a front squat with an overhead press in one continuous movement. It primarily trains the quadriceps, glutes, shoulders, and triceps while demanding core bracing and coordination. It supports full-body strength, muscular endurance, and conditioning.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the barbell in a front-rack position across the front of the shoulders, with hands just outside shoulder width and elbows lifted forward.
  2. Stand with feet about shoulder width apart, brace the abdomen, keep the chest tall, and maintain a neutral spine.
  3. Squat down by bending the hips and knees together, keeping the knees tracking in line with the toes and the bar close to the body.
  4. Descend only as far as you can while keeping the heels grounded, chest lifted, and spine controlled.
  5. Drive through the feet to stand explosively; use the leg drive to transfer momentum to the bar.
  6. As you reach full hip and knee extension, press the bar overhead until the arms are straight, then lower it under control to the front rack before the next repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Start light. Learn the front-rack squat and overhead press positions before increasing load.
  2. Keep the bar close. Avoid letting it drift forward during the squat or press, as this can pull you out of balance.
  3. Do not press early. Finish standing before driving the bar overhead; use the legs for momentum rather than turning the movement into a separate push press.
  4. Breathe and brace. Take a breath and tighten the trunk before each descent, then reset if your posture breaks down.
