Butt Kick

Butt kicks are a running drill in which you alternately bring your heels toward your glutes while maintaining a light jogging rhythm. They primarily develop cardiovascular conditioning and coordinate the hamstrings, lower legs, and hip flexors. They are commonly used in warm-ups and conditioning sessions to improve running rhythm and leg turnover.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, your chest lifted, and your gaze forward.
  2. Begin a light jog in place or move forward slowly with short, relaxed steps.
  3. On each step, bend one knee and bring the heel toward the same-side glute, then alternate legs smoothly.
  4. Keep your knees pointing down, your hips stable, and your torso upright; let your arms swing naturally as in running.
  5. Land softly on the balls of your feet and maintain a controlled pace. Stop or slow down if you lose balance or cannot keep the movement comfortable.

Technique tips

  1. Use a small heel lift: focus on a quick, relaxed curl rather than forcing the heel hard into the glute.
  2. Keep the torso quiet: avoid leaning backward or excessively arching the lower back.
  3. Start easy: use a slow, low-impact rhythm before increasing cadence or duration.
  4. Breathe steadily and choose a clear, even surface if moving forward.
