Carioca

Carioca is a lateral running drill in which you cross one foot alternately in front of and behind the other while moving sideways. It develops agility, coordination, hip mobility, foot speed, and cardiovascular conditioning, with the lower body doing most of the work. It is commonly used in warm-ups and field-sport conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Set up on a clear, level surface with enough room to travel sideways. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart and knees softly bent.
  2. Move to one side by stepping the trailing foot across in front of the lead foot.
  3. Step the lead foot out to the side, then cross the trailing foot behind the lead foot.
  4. Continue alternating a cross in front and a cross behind while traveling smoothly sideways. Keep your chest facing forward and use relaxed arm movement for balance.
  5. At the end of the distance, slow down, reset your stance, and repeat in the opposite direction. Begin at an easy pace and increase speed only when the crossing pattern is controlled.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the feet light. Land softly and avoid stomping, especially as you increase speed.
  2. Do not twist the knees. Let the hips rotate naturally while the knees stay softly bent and aligned with the feet.
  3. Prioritize rhythm over speed. Use a controlled front-behind pattern before performing the drill quickly.
