High Knees

High knees are a running-in-place cardio drill in which you alternately drive the knees upward at a brisk rhythm. They elevate heart rate while training hip flexors, quadriceps, calves, glutes, and core control. This exercise supports cardiovascular fitness, running coordination, warm-ups, and high-intensity conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, chest lifted, and your core gently braced.
  2. Begin jogging in place on the balls of your feet, keeping your steps light and quiet.
  3. Drive one knee upward toward hip height while pumping the opposite arm naturally, then quickly switch sides.
  4. Maintain a tall posture with your gaze forward; keep the landing foot under your hips rather than reaching forward.
  5. Continue at a controlled brisk pace for the planned interval, breathing steadily throughout.
  6. Slow to an easy march before stopping if you need to reduce intensity or finish the set.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize posture over height: lift each knee only as high as you can without leaning back or rounding forward.
  2. Land softly: use quick, light contacts to reduce impact and keep your ankles, knees, and hips aligned.
  3. Use your arms: coordinated arm drive helps maintain rhythm without twisting the torso.
  4. Build speed gradually: start with marching or a slower cadence, then increase pace as control improves.
