Cable Preacher Curl

The cable preacher curl is an isolation exercise performed with the upper arms supported on a preacher bench while curling a low cable attachment. It primarily trains the biceps through controlled elbow flexion, with the forearms assisting grip. The cable provides consistent resistance and can support biceps strength and muscle-building goals.

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley to its lowest position and attach a straight bar or suitable curl handle. Select a light load you can control.
  2. Place a preacher bench facing the cable. Grip the attachment with an underhand grip and rest the backs of your upper arms firmly on the pad, keeping your chest tall.
  3. Begin with the elbows nearly straight, maintaining a neutral wrist and slight softness at the elbows rather than forcefully locking them.
  4. Keeping your upper arms in contact with the pad, curl the handle upward by bending only at the elbows. Keep the shoulders still and avoid lifting the chest from the bench.
  5. Pause briefly when the biceps are fully contracted, without allowing the wrists to bend back or the elbows to shift forward.
  6. Lower slowly until the elbows are nearly straight and the biceps are lengthened under control. Repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the upper arms planted: the preacher pad should prevent shoulder swing, not be used as leverage to move a heavier load.
  2. Use a load that allows a controlled lowering phase; avoid letting the cable pull the elbows straight quickly.
  3. Keep wrists neutral and squeeze the handle firmly without turning the curl into a wrist movement.
  4. Use a comfortable range of motion. Stop short of painful elbow or shoulder positions and reduce the load if control is lost.
