Cable Pulldown Bicep Curl

The cable pulldown biceps curl is an isolation exercise performed with a high cable pulley and an underhand grip. It primarily trains the biceps while the forearms assist with gripping and elbow control. It can support arm strength and biceps hypertrophy with smooth, consistent cable resistance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley to a high position and attach a straight bar or short cable handle.
  2. Face the pulley, take an underhand grip, and step back until the cable is taut; stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart.
  3. Keep your upper arms close to your sides, chest lifted, and wrists neutral. Begin with your elbows nearly straight without locking them forcefully.
  4. Exhale and curl the handle toward your upper chest by bending only at the elbows; keep your shoulders down and avoid leaning back.
  5. Pause briefly when the biceps are contracted, then inhale and return the handle slowly until the elbows are nearly straight.
  6. Use a load that allows controlled repetitions. Stop if you feel sharp pain in the elbows, shoulders, or wrists.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows still: If they drift forward or backward, reduce the load and focus on elbow flexion.
  2. Control the return: Lower the handle slowly rather than allowing the weight stack to pull your arms straight.
  3. Avoid body swing: Keep your ribs down and torso tall; momentum reduces biceps work and can stress the lower back.
  4. Use comfortable wrists: Keep them aligned with the forearms instead of bending them back or curling them inward.
