Cable Standing Curl

The standing cable curl is an isolation exercise performed by curling a low cable attachment toward the shoulders while standing. It primarily trains the biceps, with the forearms assisting grip and elbow flexion. The cable provides consistent resistance and supports arm-strength and muscle-building goals.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley low and attach a straight bar or suitable curl handle. Select a light load that allows controlled repetitions.
  2. Face the machine and stand tall with feet about hip-width apart. Hold the attachment with an underhand grip, arms extended, elbows close to your sides, and wrists neutral.
  3. Brace your abdomen and keep your chest lifted without leaning backward. Begin with the cable under tension.
  4. Exhale as you curl the attachment toward your shoulders by bending only at the elbows. Keep your upper arms still and avoid swinging your torso.
  5. Squeeze the biceps briefly near the top without forcing the wrists to bend or driving the elbows far forward.
  6. Inhale and lower the attachment slowly until the elbows are nearly straight, maintaining control and tension. Repeat for the planned repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows fixed: Let the forearms move while the upper arms stay close to the ribs.
  2. Use a manageable load: If you must lean back or swing, reduce the weight.
  3. Control the lowering phase: Lower slowly instead of allowing the weight stack to pull your arms down.
  4. Keep wrists neutral: Avoid curling the wrists to compensate for tired biceps.
