Cable Standing Leg Curl

The cable standing leg curl is a unilateral hamstring isolation exercise performed by curling the lower leg against a low cable. It primarily develops the hamstrings while the glutes and trunk help maintain a stable standing position. It supports hamstring strength, balanced leg development, and controlled knee-flexion training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley to its lowest position and attach an ankle cuff. Fasten the cuff securely around one ankle.
  2. Face the machine and hold its frame or handles lightly. Step back until the cable has tension, stand tall, and keep a soft bend in the supporting knee.
  3. Keep your thighs aligned and your pelvis level. Exhale as you bend the working knee and draw your heel toward your glute.
  4. Pause briefly without swinging or arching your lower back, then inhale as you slowly return the foot to the starting position under control.
  5. Complete the repetitions on one side, then attach the cuff to the other ankle and repeat. Use a load that permits a steady torso and controlled motion.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the hip still: move from the knee rather than allowing the thigh to swing forward or backward.
  2. Use a smooth, controlled return; do not let the cable pull the working leg straight abruptly.
  3. Hold the support only for balance and keep the supporting knee softly bent rather than locked.
