Machine Seated Leg Curl

The machine seated leg curl is an isolation exercise performed by bending the knees against machine resistance while seated. It primarily trains the hamstrings and supports leg strength, balanced lower-body development, and knee-flexion control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the knee pivot aligns with your knees, the back pad supports your torso, and the ankle pad rests just above your heels.
  2. Sit tall with your back against the pad, secure the thigh restraint snugly over your thighs, and hold the handles.
  3. Begin with your knees nearly straight without forcing them into a hard lock; keep your hips and lower back in contact with the pads.
  4. Exhale and curl the ankle pad downward and back by bending your knees until you reach a controlled comfortable range.
  5. Inhale and return the weight slowly until the knees are nearly straight, maintaining control and avoiding a weight-stack impact.

Technique tips

  1. Match the pivot to your knee joint before loading the machine; poor alignment can make the movement feel uncomfortable.
  2. Keep the thigh restraint firm and avoid lifting your hips or arching your lower back to move the weight.
  3. Use a smooth tempo, especially on the return, and select a load that allows full control without swinging.
  4. Stop short of pain; use only a comfortable knee range and reduce the load if form changes.
