Smith Machine Good Morning

The Smith Machine Good Morning is a loaded hip-hinge exercise performed with the bar fixed on a Smith machine. It primarily trains the hamstrings and glutes while the spinal erectors and core help maintain a stable torso. It can support posterior-chain strength and hip-hinge technique when performed with controlled range of motion.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith-machine bar around upper-chest height and choose a light load. Step under the bar so it rests comfortably across the upper traps, not on the neck, then stand tall and release the safety catches.
  2. Place your feet about hip width apart, with knees softly bent. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest long, and maintain a neutral spine.
  3. Push your hips backward while allowing your torso to tip forward. Keep the bar close to your upper back and maintain even pressure through your feet.
  4. Lower only until you feel a strong hamstring stretch or until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor, without rounding your lower back.
  5. Drive your hips forward and squeeze your glutes to return to standing. Finish tall without leaning backward, then re-engage the safety catches before stepping away.

Technique tips

  1. Start light: the fixed bar path does not replace control; build load only after you can hinge without rounding your back.
  2. Keep a small, consistent knee bend. Turning the movement into a deep squat reduces the intended hip-hinge emphasis.
  3. Keep your neck aligned with your torso rather than looking sharply up or down.
  4. Exhale as you stand, maintain abdominal tension, and stop the set if you cannot keep a neutral spine.
