Dumbbell Alternating Bicep Curl

The dumbbell alternating bicep curl is an isolation exercise in which one arm curls a dumbbell at a time. It primarily trains the biceps, with the forearms assisting grip and elbow control. It supports arm-strength and muscle-building goals while allowing focused control of each side.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with your palms facing forward.
  2. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and let your shoulders stay down and back. Keep a soft bend in the knees.
  3. Curl one dumbbell toward the same-side shoulder by bending the elbow. Keep the upper arm close to your torso and the wrist neutral.
  4. Pause briefly near the top without moving the elbow forward or twisting the torso, then lower the dumbbell slowly until the elbow is straight but not forced into lockout.
  5. Curl the other dumbbell using the same controlled path. Continue alternating sides while keeping the body still and using a load you can control.

Technique tips

  1. Keep your elbows still: moving them forward shifts work away from the biceps and can encourage momentum.
  2. Avoid swinging: if you must lean back or swing the dumbbells, reduce the load.
  3. Control the lowering phase: lower each dumbbell smoothly rather than letting it drop.
  4. Breathe steadily: exhale as you curl and inhale as you lower.
