Dumbbell Alternating Incline Curl

The dumbbell alternating incline curl is a seated biceps isolation exercise performed one arm at a time on an incline bench. The inclined position places the arms behind the torso, emphasizing the biceps through a long, controlled range of motion. It supports biceps strength, muscle development, and controlled elbow-flexion technique.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set an incline bench to a moderate angle, sit back with your upper back supported, and plant both feet firmly on the floor.
  2. Hold a dumbbell in each hand with your arms hanging straight down slightly behind your torso, palms facing forward, and keep your shoulders relaxed.
  3. Exhale and curl one dumbbell toward the same-side shoulder by bending only at the elbow. Keep the upper arm still and the wrist neutral.
  4. Pause briefly near the top without allowing the elbow to drift forward or the shoulder to roll up.
  5. Inhale and lower the dumbbell slowly until the elbow is straight and the biceps is comfortably lengthened.
  6. Repeat with the other arm, alternating sides while maintaining contact with the bench. Use a load you can control without swinging or arching your lower back.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows back: Maintain the starting arm position slightly behind the torso to preserve the incline-curl setup.
  2. Use a full controlled range: Lower slowly rather than dropping the dumbbell, but do not force an uncomfortable shoulder or elbow stretch.
  3. Avoid momentum: Keep your back against the bench and reduce the load if you must swing, shrug, or move the elbow forward.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale during the curl and inhale on the controlled descent.
