Dumbbell Alternating Preacher Curl

The dumbbell alternating preacher curl is an isolation exercise performed one arm at a time with the upper arm supported on a preacher bench. It primarily trains the biceps through a controlled elbow-flexion movement while limiting body momentum. It supports biceps strength, muscle development, and arm-control training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the bench: Adjust the preacher pad so your armpit sits close to its top edge, then choose a dumbbell you can control smoothly.
  2. Take the start position: Sit tall, place one upper arm flat against the pad, and hold the dumbbell with a supinated, palm-up grip. Begin with the elbow nearly straight without forcefully locking it.
  3. Curl the dumbbell: Keep the upper arm in contact with the pad and curl the dumbbell toward the shoulder by bending only the elbow. Exhale as you lift.
  4. Pause and lower: Briefly squeeze the biceps at the top, then inhale and lower the dumbbell slowly until the elbow is nearly straight.
  5. Alternate arms: Complete the chosen repetitions with one arm, or alternate sides as planned. Keep the torso still and repeat with the same controlled technique on both sides.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the shoulder down: Do not let the shoulder roll forward or lift to shorten the curl.
  2. Control the lowering phase: Lowering slowly helps maintain tension and prevents the dumbbell from pulling abruptly on the elbow.
  3. Use a manageable load: If your upper arm loses contact with the pad or your torso moves, reduce the weight.
  4. Respect your range: Avoid forcing the elbow into a hard lockout or lifting beyond a comfortable shoulder position.
