Dumbbell Alternating Hammer Curl

The dumbbell alternating hammer curl is an arm isolation exercise performed by curling one dumbbell at a time with a neutral, palms-facing grip. It primarily trains the biceps and brachialis, while the forearms assist with gripping and elbow flexion. It supports arm strength and muscle development with controlled unilateral repetitions.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand, arms by your sides, feet about hip-width apart, and palms facing inward.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest tall, shoulders relaxed, wrists neutral, and gently brace your abdomen. Keep both elbows close to your torso.
  3. Curl one side: Exhale and bend one elbow to lift the dumbbell toward the front of the same shoulder without turning the palm up.
  4. Lower with control: Inhale and lower that dumbbell until the elbow is straight but not forcefully locked.
  5. Alternate: Curl the other dumbbell in the same manner. Continue alternating sides while keeping your torso still and repetitions smooth.

Technique tips

  1. Avoid swinging: If you need to lean back or drive the weight with your hips, reduce the load.
  2. Keep the grip neutral: Maintain palms facing inward throughout each repetition.
  3. Control the lowering phase: Lower each dumbbell deliberately rather than letting it drop.
  4. Use comfortable range: Stop before shoulder discomfort or elbow pain develops.
