Dumbbell Alternating Seated Curl

The dumbbell alternating seated curl is an isolation exercise performed while seated, curling one dumbbell at a time toward the shoulder. It primarily trains the biceps, with the forearms assisting grip and elbow flexion. The seated position helps limit body momentum and supports biceps strength and muscle development.

Instructions

  1. Sit tall on a bench with a dumbbell in each hand, arms extended by your sides and feet planted firmly on the floor.
  2. Keep your chest up, shoulders relaxed, and elbows close to your torso. Begin with palms facing inward or forward.
  3. Curl one dumbbell toward the same-side shoulder by bending the elbow; rotate the palm upward during the lift if starting with a neutral grip.
  4. Pause briefly near the top while keeping the upper arm still, then lower the dumbbell slowly until the elbow is fully extended without locking forcefully.
  5. Repeat with the other arm, alternating sides while keeping your torso against the bench and avoiding swinging.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled load: choose dumbbells that allow a smooth lift and slow descent without leaning back.
  2. Keep elbows quiet: do not let them drift forward or flare away from your sides.
  3. Breathe steadily: exhale as you curl and inhale as you lower; stop if you feel sharp pain.
