Dumbbell Concentration Curl on Stability Ball

The dumbbell concentration curl on a stability ball is a single-arm biceps exercise performed while seated on a stability ball, with the working elbow braced against the inner thigh. It primarily targets the biceps while the ball adds a balance and posture challenge. It supports arm-strength and muscle-building goals when performed with controlled resistance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Place a stability ball on a clear, non-slip surface and sit near its front with both feet firmly planted about hip-width apart.
  2. Position: Hold one dumbbell with a neutral grip. Lean slightly forward and brace the back of the working upper arm or elbow against the inner thigh; keep the arm nearly straight.
  3. Curl: Keep the upper arm still and curl the dumbbell toward the working shoulder by bending the elbow. Turn the palm upward as you lift if comfortable.
  4. Pause: Briefly squeeze the biceps at the top without lifting the elbow from the thigh or rounding the back.
  5. Lower and switch: Slowly lower the dumbbell until the elbow is nearly straight, maintaining control. Complete the repetitions, then change arms while staying balanced on the ball.

Technique tips

  1. Choose a manageable load: Use a dumbbell you can lower slowly without swinging the torso or shifting around on the ball.
  2. Keep the elbow anchored: Let the elbow act as the pivot; do not pull it forward to make the repetition easier.
  3. Prioritize balance: If you cannot keep both feet planted and the ball steady, reduce the load or practice the movement on a stable seat first.
