Dumbbell High Curl

The dumbbell high curl is an isolation exercise performed with the upper arms raised out to the sides and the elbows bent to curl the dumbbells upward. It primarily trains the biceps while the shoulders help hold the arm position. It supports arm strength and biceps muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand, feet about hip-width apart, and palms facing forward.
  2. Raise your upper arms out to the sides until they are roughly parallel to the floor; keep the elbows bent slightly and in line with the shoulders.
  3. Exhale and curl the dumbbells upward by bending the elbows, keeping the upper arms as still as possible.
  4. Pause briefly near the top while squeezing the biceps, without lifting the shoulders or allowing the elbows to drift backward.
  5. Inhale and lower the dumbbells slowly to the starting elbow angle. Keep your torso upright and repeat with controlled movement.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load. Holding the upper arms raised challenges the shoulders, so prioritize control over weight.
  2. Keep your elbows wide and level; dropping them turns the movement into a standard curl.
  3. Do not swing, lean back, or use momentum to lift the dumbbells.
  4. Stop or reduce the range if raising the arms causes sharp shoulder discomfort.
