Dumbbell Rotational Bench Press

The dumbbell rotational bench press is a flat-bench pressing exercise in which the dumbbells rotate from a neutral grip near the bottom to a palms-forward grip as you press. It primarily trains the chest while also working the triceps and front shoulders. The movement can support upper-body pressing strength, muscle development, and shoulder-control awareness.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up on a flat bench with a dumbbell in each hand, feet firmly on the floor, and your upper back and head supported.
  2. Hold the dumbbells beside the chest with elbows slightly below shoulder level and palms facing each other.
  3. Press upward smoothly while rotating the dumbbells so the palms gradually face forward near the top.
  4. Finish with arms nearly straight above the chest; keep the dumbbells controlled and do not forcefully lock the elbows.
  5. Lower slowly while reversing the rotation until the palms face each other again. Keep the wrists neutral, shoulders stable, and repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first to learn the press and rotation as one smooth motion.
  2. Keep the dumbbells over the chest rather than drifting toward the face or abdomen.
  3. Avoid excessive flare: keep the elbows at a comfortable angle instead of forcing them directly out to the sides.
  4. Exhale as you press and inhale as you lower under control.
