Dumbbell Zottman Curl

The dumbbell Zottman curl combines a supinated curl on the way up with a pronated lowering phase. It primarily trains the biceps while placing substantial controlled work on the forearms and grip, supporting arm strength and muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand, arms at your sides, palms facing forward, and feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Keep your elbows close to your ribs and curl both dumbbells upward by bending the elbows; keep the wrists straight.
  3. At shoulder height, rotate your forearms so your palms face down, without letting the elbows drift forward.
  4. Lower the dumbbells slowly to your sides with palms down, resisting the weight throughout the descent.
  5. At the bottom, rotate back to palms forward and repeat. Keep your torso still and use a load you can lower with control.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize the lowering phase: use a slower, controlled descent rather than dropping the dumbbells.
  2. Keep your upper arms still; swinging the torso or driving the elbows forward reduces the intended arm work.
  3. Use lighter dumbbells than for a regular curl if needed, because the pronated descent can challenge the wrists and forearms.
