Bodyweight Calf Raise

The bodyweight calf raise is a standing ankle-extension exercise performed using only your body weight. It primarily trains the calves, especially the gastrocnemius and soleus, while also developing ankle control and lower-leg endurance. It supports calf strength, balance, and everyday activities such as walking, running, and climbing stairs.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart and parallel on a stable, level surface. Lightly hold a wall or sturdy support if needed for balance.
  2. Set your posture by keeping your chest tall, knees softly straight without locking, and abdominal muscles gently braced.
  3. Rise onto the balls of your feet by pressing through your big toes and lifting both heels as high as you can without rolling your ankles outward or inward.
  4. Pause briefly at the top while keeping your weight balanced across the forefeet and your body upright.
  5. Lower slowly until your heels return to the floor under control, then repeat for the planned repetitions.
  6. Stop or reduce the range if you feel sharp pain or cannot maintain stable foot and ankle alignment.

Technique tips

  1. Use a controlled tempo: avoid bouncing; make the lowering phase slow and deliberate.
  2. Keep the feet parallel: do not let the arches collapse or shift all the pressure to the outer edges of the feet.
  3. Use support appropriately: a light handhold can improve balance without reducing the work of the calves.
  4. Breathe naturally: exhale as you rise and inhale as you lower.
