Kneeling Hip Flexor

The kneeling hip flexor stretch lengthens the muscles at the front of the hip by using a half-kneeling position and a gentle forward weight shift. It mainly targets the hip flexors, including the iliopsoas and rectus femoris, while requiring light glute and core control. It can support hip mobility and comfort after prolonged sitting or lower-body training.

Instructions

  1. Start in a half-kneeling position with one knee on a padded surface and the opposite foot flat in front, with the front knee roughly above the ankle.
  2. Square your hips forward and keep your torso tall. Lightly brace your abdomen.
  3. Gently squeeze the glute of the kneeling-side leg and slightly tuck your pelvis under.
  4. Shift your hips forward slowly until you feel a mild stretch across the front of the hip on the kneeling side.
  5. Hold the position while breathing steadily, without arching your lower back or forcing the range. Return slowly and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use padding under the kneeling knee for comfort and stable positioning.
  2. Keep the movement small: a pelvic tuck and glute squeeze are usually more effective than a large forward lunge.
  3. Stop at mild tension, not pain, and avoid twisting or letting the front knee collapse inward.
